    Summary

    Intralesional injections of triamcinolone acetonide and distilled water showed similar effectiveness for neurodermatitis circumscripta. Distilled water may act as a placebo, particularly in suggestible patients.

    Background:

    • Neurodermatitis circumscripta, also known as lichen simplex chronicus, is a chronic skin condition characterized by intense itching and scratching.
    • Intralesional injections are a common treatment modality for localized skin conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of intralesional triamcinolone acetonide compared to distilled water in treating neurodermatitis circumscripta.
    • To explore the potential placebo effect of distilled water injections.

    Main Methods:

    • Thirty patients with neurodermatitis circumscripta received weekly intralesional injections via a Dermo-Jet device for eight weeks.
    • Fifteen patients were treated with triamcinolone acetonide (0.25 mg/cm2), and the remaining fifteen received distilled water.
    • Patients were followed for an additional four weeks post-treatment.

    Main Results:

    • Excellent treatment outcomes were observed in 66% of patients receiving triamcinolone acetonide.
    • Excellent outcomes were also noted in 46% of patients treated with distilled water.
    • The difference in treatment response between the two groups was not statistically significant.

    Conclusions:

    • Intralesional triamcinolone acetonide and distilled water injections demonstrated comparable efficacy in managing neurodermatitis circumscripta.
    • The positive response in the distilled water group suggests a potential placebo effect, especially in emotionally susceptible individuals.
