    Summary

    Chronic sinusitis significantly alters mucus production in the maxillary sinus. Newly formed glands, not goblet cells, are the primary source of increased mucus in this condition.

    Background:

    • Chronic sinusitis is a common condition characterized by inflammation of the maxillary sinuses.
    • Understanding the mechanisms of mucus overproduction is crucial for effective treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantitatively assess mucus production in chronic sinusitis.
    • To investigate the role of goblet cells and glandular changes in the maxillary sinus.

    Main Methods:

    • Quantitative histological analysis of 47 whole-mount maxillary sinus samples.
    • Comparison of chronic sinusitis cases with normal maxillary sinuses.

    Main Results:

    • Goblet cell density was lower in chronic sinusitis (7350 cells/mm2) compared to normal sinuses (9700 cells/mm2).
    • Gland density was significantly increased (1.2 gland/mm2) in chronic sinusitis, six times higher than normal.

    • The findings highlight the role of glandular hyperplasia and neoformation in the pathophysiology of chronic sinusitis.
