Complex-motion tomography revealed diverse inner ear anomalies in congenital sensorineural hearing loss patients. The Mondini malformation was most common, but isolated dysplasias also contributed to hearing loss.

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Medical Imaging
    • Genetics

    Background:

    • Congenital sensorineural hearing loss (CSNHL) presents a diagnostic challenge.
    • Understanding inner ear malformations is crucial for CSNHL management.

    Observation:

    • 47 patients with CSNHL underwent complex-motion tomography.
    • Patients were categorized into syndromic, non-syndromic, and microtia groups.

    Findings:

    • A wide spectrum of inner ear anomalies was observed.
    • Mondini malformation and its variants were the most frequent findings.
    • Isolated anomalies of the internal auditory canal and vestibular aqueduct were also noted.

    Implications:

    • Inner ear malformations in CSNHL are varied and not always syndrome-specific.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Microtia can coexist with significant inner ear abnormalities.
  • Tomographic imaging aids in characterizing CSNHL-associated otic malformations.
