Necrotizing vasculitis from radiographic contrast media.

F A Kerdel, D L Fraker, H A Haynes

Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology
    |January 1, 1984
    PubMed
    Summary

Radiocontrast media can cause necrotizing vasculitis and nephritis. Pre-injection with xylocaine and epinephrine may protect skin from these adverse reactions, suggesting a potential protective mechanism.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Dermatology
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Adverse reactions to radiocontrast media can include systemic effects.
    • Cutaneous necrotizing vasculitis and nephritis are severe potential complications.

    Observation:

    • Two patients developed vasculitis and nephritis post-intravascular radiocontrast injection.
    • One patient showed spared skin in an area pre-treated with xylocaine and epinephrine.

    Findings:

    • The study presents cases of radiocontrast-induced vasculitis and nephritis.
    • Pre-treatment with xylocaine and epinephrine appeared to prevent cutaneous vasculitis in one patient.

    Implications:

    • This observation suggests a potential protective role for xylocaine and epinephrine against radiocontrast-induced vasculitis.
    • Further research into the mechanisms of radiocontrast hypersensitivity and potential prophylactic treatments is warranted.
