Pneumoperitoneum detected by ultrasound

Pneumoperitoneum was detected when using real-time ultrasound to evaluate three patients who had not undergone conventional radiographic examinations previously. The transducer was placed over the anterior and lateral aspect of the liver while the patient was first supine and then in a left lateral decubitus position.
