    Summary

Ophthalmomyiasis externa, caused by the sheep nasal botfly (Oestrus ovis), is common in North America. Studies show no chronic complications in individuals previously affected by this eye condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Ophthalmology
    • Parasitology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Oestrus ovis, the sheep nasal botfly, is a significant cause of ophthalmomyiasis externa in North America.
    • Cases in the United States are frequently reported on Catalina Island.
    • Acute symptoms mimic conjunctivitis and are typically self-limiting.

    Observation:

    • A case of acute Oestrus ovis ophthalmomyiasis externa in a visitor to Catalina Island was recently documented.
    • Ophthalmic examinations were conducted on 15 Catalina Island residents with a history of O. ovis ophthalmomyiasis externa prior to 1981.
    • The study aimed to assess the incidence of chronic complications following external ocular infestation.

    Findings:

    • No evidence of persistent Oestrus ovis infestation was found in examined residents.
    • No signs of intraocular penetration by the sheep nasal botfly larvae were detected.
    • Previous cases of O. ovis ophthalmomyiasis externa did not lead to chronic ocular issues in the studied population.

    Implications:

    • Ophthalmomyiasis externa caused by O. ovis appears to have a favorable long-term prognosis.
    • The findings suggest that prompt treatment and management of acute cases prevent lasting ocular damage.
    • This research contributes to understanding the epidemiology and long-term effects of O. ovis in human populations, particularly in endemic areas like Catalina Island.
