Speech abnormalities in tardive dyskinesia.

B R Gerratt, C G Goetz, H B Fisher

    Archives of Neurology
    |March 1, 1984
    PubMed
    Summary

Tardive dyskinesia impacts speech, particularly temporal and voice aspects, affecting intelligibility. Trunk movements were more pronounced in patients with speech issues, but other involuntary movements were similar.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Speech-Language Pathology

    Background:

    • Tardive dyskinesia is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary movements.
    • Speech impairments can be a significant, yet understudied, symptom of tardive dyskinesia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate speech abnormalities in patients with tardive dyskinesia.
    • To identify specific speech dimensions affected and their relation to involuntary movements.

    Main Methods:

    • Speech evaluation of twelve outpatients with tardive dyskinesia using trained listeners.
    • Analysis of oral reading and vowel production across multiple speech dimensions.
    • Correlation of speech deviations with scores from the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale.

    Main Results:

    • Six patients exhibited speech abnormalities, primarily in temporal organization and voice production.
    • These temporal and voice deviations significantly impacted speech intelligibility and quality.
    • Articulation deviations were less severe; trunk movement scores were higher in patients with speech impairment.

    Conclusions:

    • Temporal and voice production deficits are key speech issues in tardive dyskinesia.
    • Trunk movement severity may correlate with speech impairment in tardive dyskinesia.
    • Further research is needed to understand the full spectrum of speech involvement.
