    Background:

    • Calcium-phosphate (Ca-Pi) metabolism is crucial for bone health and overall physiological function.
    • Hormonal contraceptives are widely used by premenopausal women, and their impact on mineral metabolism warrants investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of hormonal contraceptives on plasma phosphate (Pi) levels and Ca-Pi metabolism indices in healthy premenopausal women.
    • To explore the relationship between hormonal contraceptive use, blood pressure, and plasma Pi.

    Main Methods:

    • Cross-sectional study involving 129 healthy premenopausal women, divided into users (n=59) and non-users (n=70) of hormonal contraceptives.
    • Measurement of fasting plasma phosphate (Pi), urinary cAMP, and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH).
    • Assessment of blood pressure, age, body weight, and UV excretion (UVcr).

    Main Results:

    • Fasting plasma Pi was significantly lower in women using hormonal contraceptives (0.96 +/- 0.17 mmol/l) compared to non-users (1.06 +/- 0.16 mmol/l) (p < 0.01).
    • Users of hormonal contraceptives exhibited higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with an inverse correlation between blood pressure and plasma Pi.
    • No significant differences were observed in urinary cAMP or iPTH levels between the two groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Hormonal contraceptives containing estrogen are associated with decreased plasma phosphate (Pi) levels in premenopausal women.
    • Estrogen-containing hormonal contraceptives may also reduce urinary calcium excretion.
    • The findings suggest a potential impact of hormonal contraceptives on Ca-Pi homeostasis and blood pressure regulation.
