    Summary

Single oblique-view mammography misses 11% of cancers, particularly small ones. Four-view mammography is recommended for all women at their first screening to improve cancer detection rates.

    Area of Science:

    • Radiology
    • Oncology
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Single oblique-view mammography is a recommended screening method.
    • Concerns exist regarding the detection rates of this limited view.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of single oblique-view mammography in cancer detection.
    • To determine the potential for missed diagnoses with this screening approach.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of mammography screening data.
    • Comparison of cancer detection rates between single oblique-view and four-view mammography.

    Main Results:

    • Single oblique-view mammography can lead to 11% of cancers remaining undetected.
    • The smallest, most curable cancers are most likely to be missed.
    • 39% of women may require additional views beyond the oblique view.

    Conclusions:

    • Single oblique-view mammography significantly reduces screening benefits by missing cancers.
    • Four-view mammography (oblique plus craniocaudal views) is recommended for all women at their initial screening visit to enhance cancer detection.
