    Summary

    A novel external DDD pacing device, using a modified permanent pulse generator, effectively controlled arrhythmias in most patients. This temporary pacing approach proved beneficial for evaluating permanent pacemaker implantation.

    Background:

    • Temporary pacing is crucial for managing arrhythmias and assessing permanent pacemaker needs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and evaluate a temporary external DDD ()="Dual-Chamber Pacing" pacing device.
    • To assess the efficacy and safety of this device for controlling bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias.

    Main Methods:

    • A modified permanent pulse generator was adapted for external DDD pacing.
    • Temporary atrial and ventricular electrode catheters were inserted pervenously.
    • The system was evaluated in 13 patients for temporary pacing (mean 4.9 days).

    • Eight out of 13 patients benefited from temporary DDD pacing.
    • Seven patients subsequently received permanent DDD pacemakers.
    • Minor complications included atrial fibrillation and lead displacement in some patients.

    • It offers a practical solution for assessing patient response to DDD pacing and optimizing cardiac output or arrhythmia control.
