N Mamelle, B Laumon, P Lazar

    Summary

Occupational fatigue is a significant risk factor for premature birth. This study found a direct correlation between job strenuousness and increased rates of preterm delivery in working women.

    Area of Science:

    • Occupational Health
    • Maternal Health
    • Sociology

    Background:

    • Pregnancy outcomes can be influenced by occupational exposures.
    • Identifying workplace risks is crucial for maternal and infant health.
    • Previous research has explored various factors affecting pregnancy, but occupational fatigue requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify elements of occupational fatigue as risk factors for pregnancy complications.
    • To specifically assess the link between job-related fatigue and premature birth.
    • To develop a tool for detecting strenuous working conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • A survey of 3437 women post-childbirth in two French maternity hospitals (Lyon and Haguenau) during 1977-1978.
    • Analysis focused on 1928 working women, examining occupational components.
    • Development of a fatigue index based on five identified sources of job strain.

    Main Results:

    • Certain occupational categories showed a higher risk of prematurity.
    • A significant relationship was established between the prematurity rate and high fatigue scores.
    • The preterm birth rate increased from 2.3% to 11.1% as fatigue scores rose from 0 to 5.
    • This association remained statistically significant after adjusting for confounding variables.

    Conclusions:

    • Occupational fatigue is a demonstrable risk factor for premature birth.
    • The developed fatigue index effectively identifies strenuous working conditions.
    • Interventions targeting occupational fatigue may help reduce preterm birth rates.
