Palisading prostate granulomas following surgery.

C Mies, K Balogh, M Stadecker

The American Journal of Surgical Pathology
    |March 1, 1984
    PubMed
    Summary

Palisading granulomas in the prostate, resembling rheumatoid nodules, were observed in 15 patients post-surgery. These lesions are likely linked to prior prostatectomy or biopsies, not infection or connective tissue disease.

    Area of Science:

    • Uropathology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Palisading granulomas are distinctive histological findings.
    • Their occurrence in the prostate, particularly post-surgery, requires characterization.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe and illustrate palisading granulomas of the prostate in patients with a history of prostate surgery.
    • To differentiate this lesion from other prostatic pathologies and systemic conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Histopathological examination of prostate tissue from fifteen patients.
    • Correlation of histological findings with patient history of prostate surgery.

    Main Results:

    • Fifteen cases of prostatic palisading granulomas were identified.
    • The lesion histologically resembles a rheumatoid nodule.
    • No association with connective tissue disease or infection was found.

    Conclusions:

    • Palisading granulomas of the prostate are a distinct entity.
    • These lesions are likely reactive and associated with prior prostate surgery, such as transurethral prostatectomy or needle biopsy.
