    Summary

    Propranolol did not significantly affect thyroid hormone levels (tetraiodothyronine, triiodothyronine, and reverse triiodothyronine) in euthyroid dogs. This suggests propranolol is safe for thyroid function in healthy dogs.

    Background:

    • Propranolol is a beta-blocker used in veterinary medicine.
    • Its effects on thyroid hormone metabolism in healthy dogs are not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of propranolol administration on thyroid function in euthyroid Beagles.
    • To determine if propranolol alters serum concentrations of key thyroid hormones.

    Main Methods:

    • Six mature euthyroid Beagles received escalating doses of propranolol orally for 4 weeks.
    • Serum concentrations of tetraiodothyronine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) were measured weekly via radioimmunoassay.
    • Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) response was assessed before and during treatment.

    • No significant differences in baseline or TSH-stimulated serum concentrations of T4, T3, or rT3 were observed between propranolol-treated dogs and controls.
