Dislocation of the elbow joint.

O Lansinger, J Karlsson, L Körner

Archives of Orthopaedic and Traumatic Surgery. Archiv Fur Orthopadische Und Unfall-Chirurgie
    |January 1, 1984

    Summary

Conservative treatment is recommended for most simple elbow dislocations, yielding excellent or good results in 85% of cases. Fracture-dislocations have poorer outcomes, suggesting surgical repair for ligamentous injuries, especially with radial head excision.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopaedic Surgery
    • Traumatology

    Background:

    • Elbow dislocations are common injuries but have limited recent literature.
    • Treatment recommendations have shifted from conservative to surgical interventions for ligament repair.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review outcomes of simple elbow dislocations and fracture-dislocations.
    • To compare conservative versus surgical treatment for these injuries.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 72 patients treated between 1975-1980.
    • Categorization into simple dislocations (38) and fracture-dislocations (34).

    Main Results:

    • 85% of simple dislocations had excellent or good outcomes, with no significant difference between surgical and conservative groups.
    • Only 41% of fracture-dislocations achieved excellent or good results.
    • Poorer outcomes in fracture-dislocations suggest a need for surgical consideration.

    Conclusions:

    • Most simple elbow dislocations benefit from conservative management: closed reduction and short immobilization.
    • Surgical repair of elbow ligaments should be considered for fracture-dislocations, particularly when the radial head is excised.
