    Summary

Pregnancy in women with polymyositis/dermatomyositis (PM/DM) presents high risks. This autoimmune condition significantly increases the likelihood of pregnancy complications, including abortion and premature birth, for both mother and child.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Obstetrics
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Polymyositis/dermatomyositis (PM/DM) are idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.
    • The impact of pregnancy on PM/DM and vice versa requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the influence of pregnancy on PM/DM disease activity.
    • To assess the impact of PM/DM on pregnancy outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of 18 women with PM/DM.
    • Analysis of pregnancy outcomes before and during PM/DM diagnosis/exacerbation.

    Main Results:

    • Pregnancies during active PM/DM showed a 55% fetal loss rate, compared to 11.5% prior to disease onset.
    • 50% of pregnancies during PM/DM resulted in premature birth.
    • No maternal deaths were recorded, and no correlation was found between disease activity and fetal loss.

    Conclusions:

    • Pregnancy in women with PM/DM is associated with significantly higher risks of fetal loss and premature birth.
    • PM/DM should be considered a high-risk condition during pregnancy for both mother and infant.
    • Further research is warranted to optimize management strategies for pregnant patients with PM/DM.
