    Background:

    • Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness with significant public health implications.
    • Suicide attempts are a serious concern among individuals with schizophrenia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of suicide attempts in chronic schizophrenic patients.
    • To identify clinical and demographic factors associated with suicide attempts in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • A consecutive series of 127 chronic schizophrenic patients admitted to a hospital were analyzed.
    • Patients were categorized based on whether they had a history of suicide attempts.

    Main Results:

    • 55.1% of chronic schizophrenics admitted to the hospital had a history of suicide attempts.
    • Suicide attempters showed significantly higher rates of major depressive episodes (45.7%) and antidepressant medication use (65.7%).
    • Attempters also had a significantly higher mean number of psychiatric admissions (5.4 vs. 3.6).

    Conclusions:

    • Major depressive episodes and prior antidepressant treatment are associated with suicide attempts in chronic schizophrenia.
    • Increased psychiatric hospitalization history may indicate a more severe illness course linked to suicide risk.
    • These findings highlight the importance of monitoring mood symptoms and treatment history in schizophrenia for suicide prevention.
