    Area of Science:

    • General Practice
    • Psychiatry
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Depression is a common mental health condition affecting individuals across various demographics.
    • General practitioners serve as a primary point of contact for many patients experiencing mental health concerns.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and demographic correlates of depression among patients attending primary care settings.
    • To identify specific patient groups at higher risk for depression within a general practice population.

    Main Methods:

    • A cross-sectional study involving 1,250 patients from 37 general practices in three Canadian centers.
    • Utilized the CES-D (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) self-report measure to assess depression levels.

    Main Results:

    • A significant proportion of patients (33.2%) exhibited symptoms of mild to severe depression.
    • Higher depression scores were associated with female gender, residing in Winnipeg, unemployment, and divorced/separated marital status.

    Conclusions:

    • Depression is a considerable issue within primary care, affecting over one-third of the patient population studied.
    • Targeted screening and interventions may be beneficial for identified high-risk groups, including women, urban residents, unemployed individuals, and those with unstable relationships.
