Correlation between hypertension and cerebrovascular accidents in black patients
Abstract:
An analysis of the files on 545 hypertensive patients admitted to Ga-Rankuwa Hospital, Pretoria, over a 2-year period revealed a 54% incidence of 'stroke' (294 cases). The patients were divided into age groups and the correlations between hypertension and cerebrovascular accidents in the various groups were compared. A correlation between the incidence of cerebrovascular disease and of hypertension, both of which reached a peak in the 60-70-year age group, was found. Overall the incidences of both cerebrovascular disease and hypertension were higher among females.
