    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Digestive Health
    • Internal Medicine

    Background:

    • Phytobezoars are indigestible masses in the stomach, often from persimmon fruit.
    • Limited clinical data exists for non-persimmon phytobezoars.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of non-persimmon phytobezoars.
    • To compare these findings with previously reported cases of persimmon phytobezoars.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective case series of 52 patients with non-persimmon phytobezoars.
    • Analysis of patient symptoms, predisposing conditions, treatment, and outcomes.
    • Comparison with existing literature on persimmon phytobezoars.

    Main Results:

    • Common symptoms included pain (67%), nausea/vomiting (50%), and gastric ulcers (14%).
    • Two-thirds of patients had conditions affecting gastric motility.
    • Medical therapy achieved a 91% dissolution rate; 19% experienced recurrence.
    • No mortality was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Non-persimmon phytobezoars present differently than persimmon phytobezoars.
    • They carry a low risk of severe complications or death.
    • Effective medical treatments are available, but recurrence is a notable risk.
