Spindle-membrane associations in freeze fractured HeLa cells
Abstract:
Mitotic HeLa cells, obtained by means of thymidine and nocodazole synchronization, were freeze fractured, and spindle-membrane associations were studied. Except for small vesicles most membrane structures were excluded from the spindle region. A few tubular to lamellar membrane arrays were observed that projected into the spindle region from the vicinity of the spindle poles. Concentric layers of flattened, extensively fenestrated cisternae were found in the cytoplasm surrounding the spindle. The plasma membrane overlying the midbody in early G1 cells was examined.

The Mitotic Spindle
The bipolar configuration of the mitotic spindle facilitates chromosomal segregation, preparing the cell for division. One mechanism that ensures bipolar mitotic...
Spindle Assembly
In most cells, centrosomes are the primary microtubule nucleation centers. In the centrosome-mediated pathway, the G2-prophase transition triggers centrosome maturation and increased microtubule nucleation. Progressive nucleation results in a microtubule array...
The Spindle Assembly Checkpoint
Many proteins function together to control the spindle assembly checkpoint. Mutations affecting these proteins may allow cells to proceed into anaphase prematurely, resulting in the...
Disassembly of Intermediate Filaments
Keratin proteins, found at the cell periphery near cell junctions, undergo a cycle of assembly and disassembly. In Type...
