    Alcohol intoxication is often blamed for workplace accidents. However, a study of 5439 patients found less than 3% had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above the legal limit during occupational accidents.

    Background:

    • Alcohol intoxication is frequently cited as a significant factor in workplace injuries.
    • Understanding the prevalence of alcohol impairment in occupational accidents is crucial for safety interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the actual prevalence of alcohol intoxication among individuals involved in occupational accidents.
    • To determine the percentage of patients with legally defined intoxication (BAC > 0.8%) at the time of workplace incidents.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective study was conducted over one year.
    • Breath and/or blood alcohol concentrations were measured in 5439 patients presenting to emergency departments after occupational accidents.
