    Summary

    Multiple sclerosis (MS) can affect the eyes, causing inflammation around retinal blood vessels and within the retina itself. These ocular findings in MS autopsy cases correlate with optic nerve damage and central nervous system disease severity.

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system.
    • Ocular manifestations are common in MS but pathological studies of the retina are limited.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate pathological changes in the retina of multiple sclerosis autopsy cases.
    • To correlate retinal findings with neurological and immunopathological features of MS.

    Main Methods:

    • Pathological examination of eyes from 47 autopsy cases of multiple sclerosis.
    • Correlation of retinal findings with optic nerve changes, uveitis, central nervous system involvement, and clinical disease activity.

    Main Results:

    • Lymphocytic or granulomatous retinal periphlebitis was observed in 4 cases (7 eyes).
