    Summary

    Type A behavior pattern, a precursor to coronary atherosclerosis, is also linked to carotid artery disease. This study found Type A individuals were more likely to have atherosclerosis in these arteries.

    Background:

    • Type A behavior pattern is a known risk factor for coronary atherosclerosis.
    • Atherosclerosis affects the entire arterial system, not just coronary arteries.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between Type A behavior pattern and carotid artery atherosclerosis.
    • To determine if Type A behavior extends beyond coronary arteries to impact other major arteries.

    Main Methods:

    • Doppler ultrasonography was used to assess carotid artery atherosclerosis in 40-65 year olds.
    • The Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS) measured Type A behavior patterns in participants.
    • 21 men and 23 women were included in the study.

    • Individuals with carotid artery atherosclerosis were significantly more likely to exhibit Type A behavior (71%) compared to Type B (29%).
    • No significant difference in Type A or Type B prevalence was observed in non-diseased individuals (53% Type A vs. 47% Type B).

    Conclusions:

    • The findings support the hypothesis that Type A behavior is associated with atherosclerosis in arteries beyond the coronary system, specifically the carotids.
    • Type A behavior may be a generalized risk factor for arterial disease throughout the body.
