    Summary

Midline granuloma, a nasal lesion, was identified as a local malignant histiocytosis based on atypical histiocytic cells and abnormal DNA content. Radiation therapy shows promise for treating this condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Pathology
    • Oncology
    • Cytometry

    Background:

    • Midline granuloma is a destructive nasal lesion of unknown etiology.
    • Histological, ultrastructural, and cytological analyses are crucial for diagnosis.

    Observation:

    • Biopsy materials from two patients with nasal lesions were examined.
    • Tissues showed necrosis, inflammation, and infiltration by atypical histiocytic cells.

    Findings:

    • Histiocytes exhibited abnormal DNA content, exceeding 5c Exceeding-Rate and 2c Deviation Index.
    • Morphological and DNA-cytophotometry results classify the condition as local malignant histiocytosis.

    Implications:

    • This study reclassifies midline granuloma as a distinct malignant entity.
    • Radiation therapy presents a potentially effective treatment option for midline granuloma.
