    Summary

Glaucoma surgery, trabeculectomy, effectively lowers intraocular pressure in various glaucoma types. Open-angle glaucoma showed the highest success rate, normalizing pressure in over 85% of patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Surgical Procedures
    • Glaucoma Management

    Context:

    • This study analyzes outcomes of antiglaucomatous trabeculectomy in 115 glaucoma patients.
    • Observation periods ranged from 6 months to 3 years.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of trabeculectomy in managing different types of glaucoma.
    • To assess the success rates of the surgical procedure in normalizing intraocular pressure.

    Summary:

    • Trabeculectomy was performed on 115 patients with various glaucoma types, including open-angle (22.8%), narrow-angle (19.1%), and air-block (14.75%).
    • The procedure achieved pressure normalization in 85.21% of open-angle glaucoma cases and 86.3% of narrow-angle glaucoma cases.
    • The surgical mechanism involves creating a fistulating excretory duct beneath a scleroconjunctival wall, forming a seepage cushion.

    Impact:

    • Trabeculectomy demonstrates high efficacy in reducing intraocular pressure across different glaucoma subtypes.
    • The surgical approach offers a viable treatment option for patients with open-angle and narrow-angle glaucoma.
    • Findings support the use of trabeculectomy in managing complex cases, including simultaneous glaucoma and cataract.
