Colonic migrating and nonmigrating motor complexes in dogs.

    Summary

Researchers studied cyclic motor activity in dog colons, identifying colonic migrating motor complexes (CMMCs). These CMMCs were found to be independent of small intestinal migrating motor complexes (MMCs).

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Comparative Physiology
    • Digestive System Motility

    Background:

    • The colon exhibits cyclic motor activity, but its relationship with small intestinal motility is not fully understood.
    • Small intestinal migrating motor complexes (MMCs) are well-characterized patterns of coordinated contractions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize the cyclic motor activity in the colon of conscious dogs.
    • To investigate the relationship between colonic motor activity and small intestinal migrating motor complexes (MMCs).

    Main Methods:

    • Colonic motor activity was recorded using four equispaced strain gauges in conscious dogs.
    • Small intestinal myoelectric activity was simultaneously recorded using four equispaced bipolar electrodes.
    • Colonic migrating motor complexes (CMMCs) were defined as bursts of contractions migrating over at least three recording sites.

    Main Results:

    • Colonic motor activity consisted of rhythmic bursts of contractions, with mean durations ranging from 7.0 to 11.5 minutes.
    • 160 colonic migrating motor complexes (CMMCs) were recorded, predominantly migrating in the caudad direction (151 vs. 9 orad).
    • The onset of CMMCs was not temporally related to the onset or arrival of small intestinal migrating motor complexes (MMCs).

    Conclusions:

    • Colonic migrating motor complexes (CMMCs) represent a distinct pattern of colonic motility.
    • CMMCs do not exhibit the same phased activity as small intestinal migrating motor complexes (MMCs).
    • Colonic motor patterns, including CMMCs and colonic nonmigrating motor complexes (CNMCs), are regulated independently of small intestinal MMCs.
