    Summary

Dacryolithiasis cases revealed mycotic infections, likely Candida albicans, within the dacryoliths. Histopathology showed these calculi composed of mucoproteids, lipids, and leukocytes.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Dacryolithiasis, the formation of calculi in the lacrimal sac, is a rare condition.
    • Diagnosis often involves imaging techniques like dacryocystography.

    Observation:

    • Three cases of dacryolithiasis are reported.
    • Dacryocystography was used to demonstrate the dacryoliths in all patients.
    • Two dacryoliths were surgically removed, and one was passed spontaneously.

    Findings:

    • Histopathological examination of two dacryoliths indicated a mycotic infection, suspected to be Candida albicans.
    • The calculi were layered structures of neutral and acid mucoproteids and lipids.
    • Leukocyte infiltration was also noted within the dacryolith composition.

    Implications:

    • This study highlights the potential role of fungal infections in dacryolith formation.
    • Understanding the composition of dacryoliths can inform treatment strategies.
    • Further research into the etiology and management of mycotic dacryolithiasis is warranted.
