Optic nerve head drusen are rare calcified concretions that can mimic papilledema. High-resolution computed tomographic (CT) scans effectively diagnose these optic disc abnormalities.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Radiology
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Optic nerve head drusen are inherited, calcified deposits.
    • They are a common cause of pseudopapilledema, mimicking optic disc swelling.
    • Diagnosis can be challenging with ophthalmoscopy alone.

    Observation:

    • Four cases of optic nerve head drusen were analyzed.
    • Two cases were bilateral, and two were unilateral.
    • High-resolution computed tomography (CT) was employed for diagnosis.

    Findings:

    • High-resolution CT successfully identified optic nerve head drusen.
    • CT revealed characteristic well-defined, punctate calcifications.
    • These calcifications were strictly located within the optic disc.

    Implications:

    • Computed tomographic (CT) scans are valuable for diagnosing optic nerve head drusen.
    • High-resolution CT aids in differentiating drusen from true papilledema.
    • This imaging modality is crucial for managing patients with suspected optic disc abnormalities.
