    Summary

Argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) is a safe and effective initial treatment for open-angle glaucoma. ALT successfully lowered intraocular pressure and avoided further glaucoma therapies in most patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Glaucoma Research
    • Surgical Innovation

    Background:

    • Open-angle glaucoma requires effective management to prevent vision loss.
    • Medical therapy for glaucoma can be challenging in developing countries.
    • Previous treatments were not suitable for the study population.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate Argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) as an initial treatment for open-angle glaucoma.
    • To assess the efficacy and safety of ALT in a specific patient cohort.
    • To determine the potential of ALT in resource-limited settings.

    Main Methods:

    • Argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) was performed as the primary intervention.
    • Thirty eyes of 20 patients with uncontrolled open-angle glaucoma were included.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients had no prior medical or surgical glaucoma treatment.
  • Main Results:

    • ALT alone achieved an average intraocular pressure reduction of 10.1 mm Hg.
    • Glaucoma medical and surgical therapies were avoided in 83% of treated eyes.
    • The average follow-up period was 7.5 months.

    Conclusions:

    • Argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) is a safe and effective initial treatment for open-angle glaucoma.
    • ALT offers a viable alternative to medical management in developing countries.
    • Socioeconomic factors support the use of ALT where medical treatment is impractical.
