    Summary

Granulomatous peritonitis caused by cellulose fibers can mimic tuberculosis. This self-limiting condition, potentially more common than assumed, is highlighted through a patient case study.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Pathology
    • Surgical Complications

    Background:

    • Intestinal obstruction due to adhesions is a known surgical complication.
    • Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum, the membrane lining the abdominal cavity.
    • Tuberculoid granulomas are inflammatory nodules that can resemble tuberculosis.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with multiple yellow nodules on the peritoneum during a second laparotomy.
    • These nodules were initially mistaken for tuberculous lesions.
    • Microscopic examination revealed tuberculoid granulomas containing cellulose fibers.

    Findings:

    • The patient developed granulomatous peritonitis, a rare condition.
    • Cellulose fibers were identified as the causative agent within the granulomas.
    • The condition was observed to be self-limiting.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights cellulose as a potential cause of granulomatous peritonitis.
    • The condition may be underdiagnosed due to its resemblance to tuberculosis.
    • Awareness of this entity is important for accurate diagnosis and management.
