    Summary

    The brain hemispheres control attention and intention in the opposite side of space. A patient with partial callosal disconnection showed errors when crossing the midline, supporting this hemispheric attention hypothesis.

    Background:

    • The brain's hemispheres process sensory input and motor control for the opposite side of the body.
    • Hemispheres may also direct attention and intention within their contralateral hemispace.

    Observation:

    • A patient with partial callosal disconnection was studied.
    • The patient exhibited systematic leftward errors when bisecting lines with the left hand in right hemispace.
    • Conversely, rightward errors occurred when using the right hand in left hemispace.

    Findings:

    • These errors suggest that each hemisphere directs attention and intention towards the contralateral hemispace.
    • Even when using a hand within its own hemispace, subtle errors were observed, reinforcing the hemispheric bias.

    Implications:

    • This highlights the crucial role of interhemispheric communication for coordinated spatial attention and intention.
    • Disruptions in this communication can lead to spatial biases like pseudoneglect.
