    Summary

    Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in liver biopsies binds to fibrinogen, suggesting a protein-mediated interaction via disulfide bridges. This binding doesn't correlate with HBeAg positivity or affect HBsAg immunoreactivity.

    Background:

    • Ground-glass hepatocytes are a characteristic feature in liver biopsies of patients with chronic hepatitis B.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the interaction between hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and fibrinogen in liver biopsies.
    • To elucidate the nature of the binding between HBsAg and fibrinogen.

    Main Methods:

    • Deparaffinized liver biopsy sections from HBsAg-positive patients were incubated with human fibrinogen solution.
    • The effect of trypsin digestion and 2-mercaptoethanol on fibrinogen binding was assessed.
