    Summary

    Drainage of subretinal fluid during retinal reattachment surgery is common but carries risks. However, complications from this drainage are rarely the cause of surgical failure.

    Background:

    • Retinal detachment is a serious condition requiring surgical intervention.
    • Scleral buckling is a common surgical technique for retinal reattachment.
    • Drainage of subretinal fluid is often performed during scleral buckling.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the incidence and impact of subretinal fluid drainage complications in primary scleral buckling procedures.
    • To determine the rate of anatomic success and failure in relation to drainage complications.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 662 consecutive primary scleral buckling procedures.
    • Documentation of subretinal fluid drainage, associated complications, and final anatomic outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • Subretinal fluid drainage was performed in 84% of cases.
    • Complications occurred in 5.6% of drainage procedures.
    • The overall anatomic success rate was 94.2%.
    • Massive proliferative vitreoretinopathy caused 97% of failures.
    • No failures were attributed to drainage complications.

    Conclusions:

    • While drainage of subretinal fluid is a hazardous maneuver, its complications are an uncommon cause of anatomic failure in retinal reattachment.
    • The benefits of drainage in achieving successful retinal reattachment outweigh the risks of associated complications in most cases.
