    Summary

    Clear-cell syringomas are a variant of ordinary syringomas. These clear cells primarily result from glycogen accumulation, with some also containing mucin and multivesicular bodies.

    Background:

    • Syringomas are benign adnexal neoplasms originating from sweat ducts.
    • Clear-cell syringomas are a morphologic variant characterized by clear or pale-staining epithelial cells.
    • The precise cellular origin and composition of clear-cell syringomas require further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the ultrastructural and histochemical characteristics of clear-cell syringomas.
    • To determine the composition of the clear cytoplasm in these lesions.
    • To compare the cellular organization of clear-cell syringomas with conventional syringomas.

    Main Methods:

    • Conventional microscopy of 18 syringoma cases.
    • Histochemical staining for glycogen and mucin.
    • Electron microscopy of two clear-cell syringoma lesions.
