    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the behavioral development of preterm infants using the BNBAS.
    • To track changes in motor, orientation, and auditory responses from 35 to 44 weeks postconceptional age.
    • To identify patterns of uneven behavioral maturation in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • Seventeen male and 13 female preterm infants (gestational age 27-34 weeks) were assessed.
    • The Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (BNBAS) was administered at 35, 38, 40, and 44 weeks postconceptional age.
    • Infants were observed in room air, without mechanical ventilation.

    Main Results:

    • Significant improvements were observed in all five motor performance items with advancing postconceptional age.
    • Four out of six orientation cluster items also showed improvement, indicating better behavioral evolution in these areas.
    • Auditory responsiveness remained consistent from 35 weeks onward and was comparable to healthy term infants by 44 weeks.

    Conclusions:

    • Behavioral development in preterm infants does not progress uniformly across all domains.
    • Motor and orientation skills demonstrate clear maturation with increasing postconceptional age.
    • Auditory responsiveness is established early and remains stable, similar to term infants.
