Responding during reinforcement delay in a self-control paradigm.

A W Logue, T E Peña-Correal

    Summary

Pigeons choosing between immediate or delayed rewards sometimes maintained their choice of the delayed reward. This self-control behavior might be influenced by the inability to switch choices during delay periods.

    Area of Science:

    • Behavioral psychology
    • Animal cognition

    Background:

    • Self-control is crucial for long-term goals.
    • Previous studies explored self-control training in pigeons.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate pigeon choice behavior between immediate and delayed reinforcers.
    • To examine the influence of choice reversal opportunities on self-control.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight pigeons were presented with a choice between a small, immediate reinforcer and a large, delayed reinforcer.
    • Responding on an ineffective key during delay periods was recorded.
    • The opportunity to reverse initial choices was manipulated.

    Main Results:

    • Pigeons making more initial choices for the large, delayed reinforcer tended to maintain these choices.
    • Pigeons receiving more large reinforcers responded more on the ineffective key during delays.
    • Choice maintenance was observed, with limited reversal.

    Conclusions:

    • Pigeon self-control may be overestimated in studies lacking choice reversal.
    • The opportunity to switch choices impacts the demonstration of self-control.
    • Behavioral flexibility plays a role in delayed gratification studies.
