Delta agent infection in Melbourne.

J F Hoy, B G Hansson, M Dimitrakakis

    Journal of Medical Virology
    |January 1, 1984

    Summary

Researchers investigated delta agent infection in acute hepatitis B patients and HBsAg carriers. Delta infection was found in 14.4% of acute hepatitis B cases and 7.1% of carriers, predominantly intravenous drug users.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Virology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a significant global health concern.
    • The delta agent (hepatitis D virus, HDV) is a unique RNA virus that requires HBV for replication.
    • Coinfection with HBV and HDV can lead to more severe liver disease.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of delta agent infection among patients with acute hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers in Melbourne.
    • To identify risk factors associated with delta agent infection in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples from 284 patients with acute hepatitis B and 127 HBsAg carriers were collected between July 1981 and June 1982.
    • Solid-phase radioimmunoassay (SPRIA) was used to detect delta antigen (delta ag) and/or antibody (anti-delta).

    Main Results:

    • Evidence of delta agent infection was detected in 14.4% of patients with acute hepatitis B.
    • Delta agent infection was identified in 7.1% of chronic HBsAg carriers.
    • A significant proportion (88%) of individuals with confirmed delta agent infection were intravenous drug users.

    Conclusions:

    • The delta agent is prevalent in patients with acute hepatitis B and chronic HBsAg carriers in Melbourne.
    • Intravenous drug use is a major risk factor for delta agent infection.
    • These findings highlight the importance of screening for delta agent in at-risk populations.
