    Background:

    • Data from approximately 2,500 families with EEC and 215 offspring of affected parents were analyzed.

    • The recurrence rate of EEC within families with a known case was approximately 1 in 275.
    • Direct inheritance of bladder exstrophy in offspring of parents with EEC was observed at a rate of 1 in 70 live births.
    • This direct inheritance rate is higher than previously documented.

    • This information is vital for accurate genetic counseling for families with EEC.
