Psychological status before and after surgery for breast cancer

A psychological study of 80 patients undergoing mastectomy showed that the preoperative period is more affected with anxiety, that the patients need communication to remove the anxious state, and that disclosure of the diagnosis should always be accompanied by an understanding interview that includes a clear and moderately optimistic evaluation of the consequences, plans for the future, involvement of the partner and other relatives. Physician and psychologist should share this task to inform the patient and help the patient's psychological reaction towards a constructive cooperation for treatment and rehabilitation.
