    Summary

Behavioral rehearsal significantly reduced distress in young children undergoing cardiac catheterization. This preparation method led to fewer negative behaviors during and after the procedure for both children and parents.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Psychology
    • Medical Procedures
    • Child Development

    Background:

    • Cardiac catheterization is a common diagnostic procedure for children.
    • Children often experience significant distress during and after medical procedures.
    • Effective coping strategies are needed to minimize procedural anxiety in pediatric patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of a behavioral rehearsal preparation program.
    • To assess the impact of rehearsal on distress levels in children aged 3-6 years.
    • To determine if rehearsal reduces negative behaviors during and after cardiac catheterization.

    Main Methods:

    • Forty children aged 3-6 years were randomly assigned to either a rehearsal group or a usual preparation group.
    • The rehearsal program included in-vivo behavioral rehearsal, parent manuals, and coloring books.
    • Distress and behavioral reactions were assessed during the procedure and at home post-procedure.

    Main Results:

    • Children in the rehearsal group exhibited less crying, yelling, and reported pain.
    • Rehearsed patients showed lower motor activity and fewer regressive, aggressive, and anxiety behaviors at home.
    • Parents of rehearsed children reported less anxiety, which correlated with reduced child distress.

    Conclusions:

    • Behavioral rehearsal is an effective intervention for reducing distress in children undergoing cardiac catheterization.
    • This preparation method positively impacts both child and parental psychological responses.
    • Findings support the integration of behavioral rehearsal into pediatric procedural care.
