    Observation:

    • Peritoneal eosinophil percentage and absolute counts decreased significantly over one year in 61 patients.
    • Initial high eosinophil counts (0-84%) narrowed considerably (0-9%) after six months.
    • Peripheral eosinophilia was noted in patients with high initial peritoneal eosinophil counts.

    Findings:

    • A significant decline in peritoneal eosinophils was observed from 18% to 3% within six months.
    • Patients developing peritonitis had lower peritoneal eosinophil percentages in the initial 1.5 months.
    • Peritoneal eosinophil counts were near zero at the time of peritonitis diagnosis.

    Implications:

    • Decreased peritoneal eosinophils may signal an increased risk of peritonitis in dialysis patients.
    • The resolution of high eosinophil counts suggests an adaptive response or normalization.
    • Further research into eosinophil roles in peritoneal dialysis complications is warranted.
