    Summary

    Electromyogram biofeedback offers a new treatment for essential blepharospasm. This therapy reduced eyelid spasms by over 60% in half of the patients studied.

    Background:

    • Essential blepharospasm is a disabling neurological movement disorder.
    • Current treatments for blepharospasm have limitations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of electromyogram (EMG) biofeedback as a treatment for essential blepharospasm.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight patients with essential blepharospasm received five sessions of EMG biofeedback.
    • Cutaneous electrodes were placed over the frontalis muscle to monitor muscle activity.

    Main Results:

    • Four out of eight patients (50%) experienced a 60% or greater reduction in blepharospasm frequency.
    • Post-treatment EMG levels significantly correlated with the degree of improvement.

    Conclusions:

    • EMG biofeedback may be a viable therapeutic option for essential blepharospasm.
    • This non-invasive approach warrants further investigation for managing this condition.
