    Summary

Optometrists often participate in vision screening programs, primarily in schools using the Modified Clinical Technique (MCT). However, current involvement is lower, and knowledge of perceptual screening is limited, especially where programs are infrequent.

    Area of Science:

    • Optometry
    • Public Health
    • Pediatric Vision

    Background:

    • Optometric practitioners traditionally engage in vision screening initiatives with educational institutions.
    • The scope of this involvement demonstrates significant geographical variability.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the extent of private optometric practitioners' involvement in vision screening programs.
    • To understand current participation levels and awareness of different screening methodologies.

    Main Methods:

    • A national survey was distributed to 500 optometrists.
    • A response rate of 49% was achieved, yielding 245 valid responses.

    Main Results:

    • Seventy percent of respondents have participated in vision screenings historically, but only 30% are currently active.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Screenings predominantly utilize the Modified Clinical Technique (MCT) battery, mainly within school settings.
  • Awareness of perceptual screening activities was notably low, reported by only 7% of participants.
  • Conclusions:

    • Optometric practitioners are generally involved in vision screening where programs exist.
    • Limited knowledge regarding screening activities correlates with infrequent program implementation.
