    Background:

    • The blood-ocular barrier (BOB) integrity is crucial for ocular health.
    • Age-related changes in the BOB are not fully understood.
    • Ocular fluorophotometry is a method to assess BOB function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of aging on the blood-ocular barrier.
    • To evaluate changes in ocular fluorescence with age.

    Main Methods:

    • A fluorophotometer was modified with a photomultiplier cooling system to enhance the Sensitivity-Noise (S-N) ratio.
    • Ocular fluorophotometry was conducted on two groups: younger adults (20-40 years) and older adults (55-62 years).

    Main Results:

    • Older individuals exhibited significantly higher fluorescence values in the mid-vitreous, lens (autofluorescence), and anterior chamber compared to younger individuals (p < 0.05).
    • Increased mid-vitreous fluorescence in older subjects is likely due to increased diffusion from vitreous liquefaction, not necessarily blood-retinal barrier abnormalities.

    Conclusions:

    • Aging is associated with increased ocular fluorescence, particularly in the lens and anterior chamber.
    • Vitreous liquefaction, a common age-related change, may contribute to increased mid-vitreous fluorescence.
    • Further research is needed to differentiate age-related fluorescence changes from pathological conditions of the blood-ocular barrier.
