    Background:

    • Chronic blepharitis is a common ocular surface condition characterized by inflammation of the eyelid margins.
    • Previous studies suggest a role for bacterial involvement in blepharitis pathogenesis, but specific profiles vary.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the bacterial flora associated with different clinical presentations of chronic blepharitis.
    • To compare the microbial findings in blepharitis patients with those in normal controls.
    • To assess the antibiotic susceptibility of isolated Staphylococcus aureus strains.

    Main Methods:

    • A comparative study involving 115 patients with chronic blepharitis and 47 normal controls.
    • Clinical classification of blepharitis into six distinct groups: staphylococcal, seborrheic (alone or with complications), and meibomian keratoconjunctivitis (MKC).
    • Bacterial cultures were performed on eyelid margin samples and expressed meibomian gland material.
    • Antibiotic susceptibility testing was conducted on isolated Staphylococcus aureus.

    Main Results:

    • Six clinical groups of blepharitis were identified, including staphylococcal, seborrheic, and meibomian keratoconjunctivitis.

    • Staphylococcus aureus plays a significant role in certain blepharitis subtypes.
    • Current ophthalmic antibiotics, excluding sulfonamides, are generally effective against Staphylococcus aureus in blepharitis.
