Contingent negative variation in obsessional-compulsive patients.

G Sartory, D Master

    Summary

Obsessional-compulsive disorder patients show differences in brain activity, specifically a later contingent negative variation (CNV) component. This suggests heightened uncertainty and doubt may underlie their condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Psychiatry
    • Cognitive Psychology

    Background:

    • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is often linked to overattention to irrelevant details.
    • The contingent negative variation (CNV) is a slow negative cortical potential reflecting cognitive processes like attention and expectation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate if the 'early' CNV component reflects the overattention characteristic of OCD.
    • To explore electrophysiological differences between OCD patients and controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Sixteen OCD patients and matched controls participated.
    • A motor-set CNV paradigm with a 5-second interval between stimulus 1 (S1) and stimulus 2 (S2) was used.
    • Electrophysiological and heart period data were collected.

    Main Results:

    • OCD patients showed a higher amplitude of the 'late' CNV component compared to controls.
    • Male OCD patients exhibited prolonged negativity in the first half of trials.
    • Patients had lower heart period levels than controls.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings suggest that the 'late' CNV component, not the 'early' one, may be more relevant to OCD.
    • Differences in CNV and heart period support the hypothesis that uncertainty and doubt play a significant role in OCD.
    • Electrophysiological measures offer insights into the cognitive underpinnings of OCD.
