    Summary

Connective tissue disease, including morphoea and keratoconjunctivitis sicca, developed in a woman with rheumatoid arthritis following augmentation mammoplasty. This case highlights potential risks even with saline-filled implants.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Ophthalmology
    • Plastic Surgery

    Background:

    • Connective tissue disease (CTD) is a potential complication following augmentation mammoplasty.
    • Previous cases have been linked to silicone gel implants, but data on saline-filled implants are limited.

    Observation:

    • A woman with seronegative rheumatoid arthritis developed morphoea and keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
    • These conditions manifested six years after undergoing augmentation mammoplasty with saline-filled silastic implants.

    Findings:

    • The patient's presentation suggests a potential association between augmentation mammoplasty using saline-filled implants and the development of CTD.
    • This contrasts with prior reports predominantly linking CTD to silicone gel implants.

    Implications:

    • This case expands the understanding of potential CTD risks associated with breast implants, irrespective of filling material.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms and incidence of CTD post-mammoplasty with various implant types.
