    Summary

    Mitral valve surgery improved right ventricular function in patients with mitral stenosis but did not change left ventricular function. However, left ventricular function deteriorated in patients with mitral regurgitation after surgery.

    • Rheumatic heart disease and mitral valve prolapse are common etiologies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effects of mitral valve surgery on cardiac function.
    • To compare outcomes in patients with mitral stenosis versus mitral regurgitation.
    • To assess changes in left and right ventricular function post-surgery.

    Main Methods:

    • Radionuclide ventriculography was used to assess cardiac function.
    • 13 patients with mitral stenosis and 8 with mitral regurgitation were studied.
