    Summary

A colon cancer patient contracted hepatitis A after a blood transfusion. The donor also developed hepatitis A, indicating a potential transmission route.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Transfusion Medicine
    • Viral Hepatitis

    Background:

    • Post-transfusion hepatitis remains a concern in transfusion medicine.
    • Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is a significant cause of viral hepatitis globally.

    Observation:

    • A 63-year-old female patient with colon cancer developed hepatitis A.
    • The patient received a single unit of concentrated red blood cells.
    • The donor subsequently developed hepatitis A 10 days post-donation.

    Findings:

    • The patient became symptomatic with hepatitis A 49 days after transfusion.
    • This case suggests transmission of hepatitis A via blood transfusion.
    • The incubation period in the donor was notably shorter than in the recipient.

    Implications:

    • Blood transfusion safety protocols may need re-evaluation for hepatitis A.
    • Screening blood donors for hepatitis A could be considered.
    • Further research is warranted to understand HAV transmission dynamics in transfusion settings.
