Prolonged gallbladder opacification after oral cholecystography.

    Summary

Prolonged gallbladder opacification after oral cholecystography is common in patients, even those without gallbladder disease. This finding suggests it cannot solely diagnose acalculous cholecystitis.

    Area of Science:

    • Radiology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Abdominal Imaging

    Background:

    • Recent reports suggest prolonged gallbladder opacification on oral cholecystograms indicates acalculous cholecystitis.
    • This diagnostic criterion requires further investigation into its prevalence and specificity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To prospectively evaluate the frequency of prolonged gallbladder opacification after oral cholecystography.
    • To determine if this finding is a reliable indicator of acalculous cholecystitis.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study of 122 patients on various diets.
    • Assessed the detectability of prolonged gallbladder opacification one and two days post-oral cholecystography.

    Main Results:

    • Prolonged gallbladder opacification was observed in 75% of all patients studied.
    • The incidence of prolonged opacification did not correlate with documented gallbladder disease.

    Conclusions:

    • Prolongation of gallbladder opacification after oral cholecystography is a common finding.
    • This finding alone is insufficient for diagnosing cholecystitis.
